Do Tesla Supercharger Fire Threats Extend Beyond Calaveras?

UPDATE: Facts and concerns of my report have been shared beyond Calaveras County with State officials and agencies to break through the resistance and bureaucratic insolence resulting in a strong expression of interest by a senior staffer to a member of the California legislature. Read on...

Calaveras County Resource Conservation District

Calaveras County Resource Conservation District Cautioned of Regional Wildfire Risk

Thursday, March 13, 2025: "My name is Christopher Buttner, I am the publisher of Calaveras2026Election.com.

I am a fulltime resident of Murphys. My entire family savings are invested in Murphys.

Here are excerpts from the statements I delivered on March 6, 2025, at the Sierra Nevada Conservancy Board of Directors Quarterly Meeting, and again during the General Public Comments period of the March 11, 2025 Calaveras Board of Supervisors Regular meeting.

For context, I am the son of a firefighter. I have over three decades of experience in event safety protocols for arenas, amusement parks, convention centers, and cruise ships.

Additionally, I am an advanced open water, stress-rescue scuba diver with 25 years experience.

I am trained in American Red Cross CPR and other lifesaving skills.

As a scuba diver, I was deeply involved in marine, environmental and wildlife conservation efforts and I regularly interfaced with and promoted leading professional scuba personalities and their internationally-recognized marine protection and preservation efforts.

I’ve seen the aftermath of multiple disasters on land and sea, and disturbingly what I am going to tell you this evening has many of the earmarks.

This community – and several nearby wildland urban interface communities in the dense timber belt of the four-county South Central Sierra Subregion – are under an extraordinary new threat of a catastrophic fire, of manmade origin and negligence, erupting in Arnold – behind the Meadowmont Center.

This threat of catastrophic fire has a name. Tesla Supercharger. Electric Vehicle Charging Station. Otherwise known as an EVCS.

A rationally sited EVCS would’ve been a very desirable addition to Arnold.

Unfortunately, this isn’t it.

The EVCS site selection process – and its construction at this precarious location – was irrational and irresponsible.

On March 4, 2025, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy – the SNC – advised me by letter that the agency “has no authority to take any action on the project described in my letter.”

I respectfully urged SNC to reconsider this position on my request for action, and examine their core mission more closely.

SNC, a State agency, is tasked with building resilience in California’s Sierra-Cascade region, inclusive of improving the environmental, economic, and social well-being.

I had expected that includes doing everything possible in the agency’s power to ensure our region is not reduced to ash from a 100% forewarned and preventable man-made calamity.

My response to SNC’s Board of Directors – which now includes District 3 Supervisor Martin Huberty, who is also the executive director of the Calaveras Visitors Bureau – was that lack of authority does not preclude SNC from directing my valid concern to the State agency or agencies having authority to act on my concerns.

That agency may be CAL FIRE, CalOES, or perhaps CalEPA – whose mission is to restore, protect and enhance the environment, to ensure public health, environmental quality and economic vitality.

Regardless of how rapidly fire officials claim they are capable of effectively responding to the scene of a potential EV fire at this location, it’s unlikely fast enough to suppress the potentially devastating effects of thermal runaway.

Let’s keep in mind, the first casualty of war is always your plan.

The seed of a potential fire-bomb – capable of laying waste to communities in the four-county South Central Sierra Subregion – was negligently sited in a vulnerable location – in distressingly close proximity to a densely forested neighborhood, large capacity propane tanks, and unregulated traffic.

Additional concerns is the backlash Tesla is facing due to Elon Musk’s erratic behavior which has led to increased vandalism of Tesla vehicles, especially Cybertrucks, as well as Tesla Superchargers, which includes, but is not limited to, arson.

When an arsonist strikes, they rarely consider the collateral damage of their actions. Arson at this EVCS could have devastating effects reaching far beyond just the Tesla product they hope to vandalize or destroy.

Lahaina. Pacific Palisades. Rim. Butte. Paradise. Eaton. Tubbs. Caldor. August Complex.

The list tragically grows.

Do we want to lose our cherished 898,000 acre Stanislaus National Forest, inclusive of Calaveras Big Trees State Park, and forest communities to a forewarned and preventable disaster?

After you’ve reviewed the leave-behind materials, I would welcome the Calaveras County Resource Conservation District to consider an evaluation field trip to the Tesla Supercharger at Arnold’s Meadowmont Center in the near future.

Thank you for your rapt attention to these recent and important concerns that now confront our homes and families in our four-county South Central Sierra Subregion.

Tesla Supercharger Poses Wildfire Risk to Calaveras County

March 25, 2025: Christopher Buttner, publisher of Calaveras2026Election.com, responds to Regular Agenda Item: 18. Receive a Presentation From Staff on the Draft Calaveras Council of Governments Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Implementation Plan. This is the March 21, 2025 Edition of the Calaveras County News and Valley Springs News.

I am going to read the Letter to the Editor on page 7, titled: Officials Warned of Potential Disaster.

This is applicable to responsible EV charging infrastructure development.

Calaveras County Government Watchdog's Wildfire Warning

"Allegation: Irresponsibly sited Tesla Supercharger poses threat to Calaveras County communities."

The Calaveras County Government Watchdog: A Citizen-Funded News Supplement - Investigation and reportage on allegations of conduct unbecoming of Calaveras County government officials.

Print publication - April 4, 2025: Arnold, (Calaveras County), California - The Calaveras County, California, communities of Arnold, Avery, Dorrington, and Murphys – along with many other wildland urban interface communities in the rural timber belt of the four-county, 27-million-acre, South Central Sierra Subregion, consisting of the counties of Amador, Calaveras, Mariposa, and Tuolumne (approximate combined population: 144,000) – are under an extraordinary and avoidable new threat of a catastrophic wildfire of manmade origin and negligence.

The Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold), which has been active since early 2024, is that avoidable catastrophic threat-in-waiting.

A potential firebomb was negligently sited in an extremely vulnerable location, in distressingly close proximity to densely forested neighborhoods, large capacity propane tanks, and unregulated traffic at the fringes of the 898,000-acre Stanislaus National Forest.

4.1 miles east, one of the most pristine and majestic groves of giant redwoods on Earth – Calaveras Big Trees State Park – is now in peril as a direct result of bureaucratic insolence.

As the overall operational safety of electric vehicles manufactured by multiple companies comes under scrutiny, and is increasingly challenged by a growing body of empirical evidence, Tesla grows prominent on that ignominious list.

Tesla vehicles are documented to have exhibited unpredictably dangerous runaway “self-driving feature” software issues. These “command center” issues have led to numerous collision reports – several of which notably have ignited high-intensity fires posing extreme risk of, or causing, casualties or deaths.

More recent concerns have the finger of “domestic terrorism” being pointed by the federal government – whether fact or fabrication – it is undeniable that the intensifying backlash confronting Tesla is a direct cause-and-effect relationship linked to perceptions and realities of Elon Musk’s conduct.

Musk’s political conduct birthed the now seemingly daily occurrences of vandalism of Tesla vehicles.

Of higher magnitude of concern – something all citizens of Calaveras County must become aware of – is that the randomness and geographic dispersion of these asymmetrical attacks against Tesla infrastructure – auto dealerships and Tesla-branded electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) – display a distressingly common theme.

The attacks are getting closer to Calaveras County.

Meyers, near Lake Tahoe in El Dorado County, has now been added to the list of Tesla attacks, with three acts of vandalism taking place between March 5 and March 13, 2025.

Of late, the intensifying frequency of this asymmetrical activity added arson to its repertoire.

An arson attack on the Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold) – or upon a Tesla vehicle charging at that facility – has the potential to unleash a wave of devastating impacts.

An incident of arson, or a vehicle charging system malfunction and battery thermal runaway occurring at the Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold) has the potential to trigger a cataclysmic impact upon the ecosystem and habitability of California’s South Central Sierra Subregion.

That impact may realistically be expected to encompass the staggering and irreplaceable loss of life and private property, and the devastation of endangered wildlife and our cherished wilderness.

The Calaveras County Director of the Office of Emergency Services (OES) claims that the Ebbetts Pass Fire District (located within 2 miles) and CAL FIRE (located within 0.5 miles) will promptly arrive on scene, and both agencies are capable of effectively responding to a potential fire at the Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold).

This work product is the result of extensive research beginning in July 2023.

It was prompted by the unnerving threat posed to our region by the irrationally and irresponsibly sited Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold).

The risk analysis presents a shameful indictment of the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors, the Meadowmont Center owners, the Calaveras County Building Department Director, a former Calaveras County Fire Marshall, and a former and the current director of the Calaveras County Office of Emergency Services.

Furthermore, two California State agencies and one County Agency have been advised in writing and/or in public forums of my concerns.

These agencies are Sierra Nevada Conservancy and CAL FIRE, as well as the Calaveras County Resource Conservation District, respectively.

The continued suppression of repeated credible warnings and the County’s failure to act on the potentially hazardous Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold) is inexcusable, and potentially criminally negligent, should a worst-case scenario unfold asymmetrically in our backyard precipitated by events rapidly occurring at the national and global scale.

Respectfully, the aforementioned government officials and business owners are urged to embrace this detailed fact pattern, and the statement of explicit concern and cautioning, with haste, as several government and agency officials will notice themselves mentioned prominently and unflatteringly.

The Calaveras County government is urged to ‘pull the plug’ on the Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS) in the Meadowmont Center (Arnold) today.

RCRC CEO Learns of Tesla Supercharger Fire Hazard Concerns

July 8, 2025 - Christopher Buttner, publisher of Calaveras2026Election.com, addresses statement of concern to potentially worsening Tesla Supercharger fire hazard threats to Calaveras County Board of Supervisors and Patrick Blacklock, President and CEO of the Rural County Representatives of California after his presentation of Regular Agenda Item 9. Receive an informational presentation regarding the Rural County Representatives of California (RCRC) Strategic Plan.

"My name is Christopher Buttner, publisher of Calaveras2026Election.com.

Two years ago, in July 2023, I investigated and published a detailed report alleging an irrationally and irresponsibly sited Tesla Supercharger Electric Vehicle Charging Station (EVCS for short), located in Arnold, in District 3, that poses an extraordinary, yet avoidable, threat of a catastrophic wildfire to our wildland urban interface communities.

This potential firebomb of manmade origin was, allegedly, negligently sited in an extremely vulnerable location, in distressingly close proximity to densely forested neighborhoods, large capacity propane tanks (picture below), and unregulated traffic at the fringes of the approximate 900,000 acre Stanislaus National Forest and 4.1 miles east from one of the most pristine and majestic groves of giant redwoods on Earth – Calaveras Big Trees State Park.

Facts and concerns stated in my report have evidently been dismissed by the entirety of the Calaveras County government for two years, so I shared the facts and concerns of my report beyond Calaveras County with State officials and agencies to break through the resistance and bureaucratic insolence.

My efforts resulted in a strong expression of interest by a senior staffer to a member of the California legislature, informing me that the local hazard I had identified and documented at the Arnold electric vehicle charging station bore some striking similarities to previously documented hazard concerns related to two other Tesla Supercharger installations elsewhere in that legislative district, having been independently documented to the legislator’s office by CAL FIRE Unit chiefs.

I was encouraged by the staffer to further research overlapping points of hazard concern common to the three Tesla Supercharger installations.

I now ask you for your commitment, as the president and CEO of the Rural County Representatives of California, to partner with me and waste no time in urging the Boards of Supervisors of its member counties to 1) ensure existing Tesla Supercharger installations are safe, secure and as fire hazard-free as possible and 2) review their county permitting processes in order to ensure the inclusion of local and regional fire officials in the permitting and approval process for all future non-residential Tesla Superchargers and similar EVCS installations and facilities.

My name is Christopher Buttner, publisher of Calaveras2026Election.com."
